Most publishing houses and even agents will ask for some sort of query letter. Here are some tips to help you make the best first impression.
*If you have a contact name, then use it.
*Give a brief pitch (Imagine you have three minutes to sell your story to the guy next to you on the elevator.) Let them get a feel for the book. The type of language used, the formality of the writing, etc.
*Describe how your book is unique.
*Give a brief biography about yourself and include your publication history, if any.
*Let them know if this is an exclusive or simultaneous submission.
*Include your contact information.
*Say thanks.
*Keep it all to a page or less.
*Make sure you follow any other specific requirements their site has as well. (An excerpt, a description on how it fits in with their other publications, etc.)
*Triple check your grammar and check for other errors. Remember, this is your first impression. Try and look nice. :D
