Strong vs Weak Verbs

How do we define verbs as weak or strong?  Weak verbs are functional, but don't add very much to the context of the story.  Strong verbs increase the level of understanding for the sentance and help create a picture.

For example: The rabbit went across the field.
Compare that to: The rabbit dashed acrosss the field.  or The rabbit zig-zagged across the field.
Another example: My sister hurt me.
Compare that to: My sister bit me. or My sister teased me.
Another example: He ate his lunch.
Compare that to: He devoured his lunch.  or He picked at his lunch.
